Planned giving operates on a strategic partnership between the donor and the charity. While some gifts are distributed immediately, many are deferred, meaning the nonprofit receives the funds at a later date, such as upon the donor's passing. In exchange for setting up these gifts, donors can often receive significant tax benefits and, in some cases, guaranteed lifetime income.
Common Types of Planned Gifts
- Bequests: The most common type of planned gift. A donor includes specific language in their will or living trust, leaving a set dollar amount, a specific asset, or a percentage of their estate to a nonprofit.
- Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs): A contract between the donor and a nonprofit. The donor transfers assets to the organization, and in return, the charity pays the donor a fixed income stream for the rest of their life.
- Beneficiary Designations: Donors name a nonprofit as the beneficiary of a retirement account (like an IRA) or a life insurance policy.
- Charitable Trusts: Legal arrangements that allow a donor to put assets into a trust. The trust pays income to the donor (or their loved ones) for a set period, after which the remaining balance goes to the charity.
For donors, planned giving is an excellent way to establish a long-term philanthropic legacy while maximizing tax savings. For nonprofits, like WOWRI, these gifts provide long-term financial security and are a vital source of permanent funding that can often build an organization's endowment.
